In several countries in Europe it is the most common thing in the world to charge tolls for driving on the roads. How much does a trip like this actually cost? AutoWeek researched what you pay for toll for a trip from Utrecht (central in the Netherlands) to the French Nice.
France has traditionally been popular with the Dutch as a holiday destination. To get an idea of how much toll you have to pay, we assume in this example a journey that starts in Utrecht and leads to Nice, centrally located on the French south coast.
The road to Nice
If we tap into TomTom’s route planner (which is widely used in separate navigation, apps on the phone and as built-in navigation in cars), the shortest and fastest route there is 1,389 km. Your driving time is 12 hours and 29 minutes. You then avoid Paris. At Charleville-Mézières you cross the border and via Troyes, Dijon, Lyon and Marseille you arrive at Nice.

How much does the toll cost for your trip to Nice?
You obviously want to know what to prepare for. You will pay toll from Taissy on the A34. There you take the ticket. You keep that until you can hand in the ticket on the A6 at Villefranche-Limas and pay €47.00 in péage. On the A7 near Vienne you take another ticket that you hand in at Lancon for a fee of €26.90. You are now near Marseille. Further on the route you will receive a new receipt at La Barque that you can pay again at Capitou (€16.80). Then you will come across a payment gate at Antibes where you have to pay €3.40. That brings the total for the toll to €94.10. With some research you could bring that peage down a bit, but that also costs you more time and hassle.
This is how you pay the toll in France
You can pay the toll in different ways on your way. The age-old option of paying in cash is also possible for the péage in France, but it is becoming increasingly limited. You can also use your credit card. There are different toll badges that you can use in France, but also in Italy, Spain and Portugal. You don’t actually have to stop with that! You can already order the Bip&Go or Fulli toll badges in the Netherlands. In addition to the toll roads, you can also use them for various parking garages. Useful!

Be aware of Vignette Crit’Air
If you leave the motorway in the south of France, chances are that you will enter an area where you need an environmental vignette. The Vignette Crit’Air applies in the center of Nice. This is indicated with signs. If you drive there, you must have a vignette on your windscreen that indicates how your car is classified. And is that class 5 or higher? Then you can’t even enter the city. You can order the vignette in advance in the Netherlands. Do that on time.
