Tip: How to keep the iTunes Mini Player always in view

Whatever new window you open, there is a way to keep the iTunes Mini Player always in view. This way you can easily control your music without getting in the way. In this article you can read how that works.

If you are a frequent user on the Mac with quite a few windows open, but you always want to be able to control your music quickly, then the iTunes Mini Player offers a solution. You can display a compact version of the program without losing it all the time. This way you can always quickly skip, pause or adjust your volume.

To make sure that the player does not get in the way, you have to put the iTunes Mini player on screen. Ultimately, it is a small bar that is on the screen, so it is hardly in the way.

Set mini player

Follow the steps below to set up the iTunes Mini Player. The Mini Player is nothing more than a very small version of iTunes, showing only the essentials. You can always go back to the full version.

  1. Open iTunes;
  2. Play a song;
  3. When the music is playing, move the mouse over the album cover, then click the Mini Player button;
  4. Click the Mini Player, then choose the button to shrink the album cover for an even more compact player.

From now on you can arrange this with the button combination ‘CMD + Shift + M’.

Now that you have the compact player, you still have to ‘lock’ it, so that it stays in view when you open a new window. You do that like this.

  1. Open iTunes;
  2. Click on ‘iTunes’ at the top left of the screen and then on ‘Preferences’;
  3. Go to ‘Advanced’;
  4. Choose ‘Mini player always on top’ and press OK.

From now on, the Mini Player will always be on screen, unless you run a program on full screen.

Disable mini player

If you no longer want to keep the Mini Player in the picture, go to the iTunes player and click on the cross on the left. You will now go back to the full iTunes screen. You can also arrange this with the key combination CMD + Shift + M.
