Do you mainly chat with a handful of contacts? Then pin these messages to the top of the Messages app. That way you can resume conversations faster. Here’s how to pin messages to your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Pin messages on iPhone and iPad
You can pin messages on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. As soon as you do this, the conversation will be placed at the top of the app, so that you can continue chatting with each other immediately. In addition, you can manually sort this ‘favorites list’, while messages are normally sorted by time.
Just make sure your Apple devices are running iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and macOS 11 (Big Sur) respectively as it won’t work in previous versions. Check? Then follow the steps below to pin messages to the top.
- To start
Open the Messages app on your Apple device;
- Pin up
In the list of messages, search for the contact you want to pin to the top. Long press this contact and the settings screen pops up;
- Confirm
Choose ‘Secure’. Your chat with that person will now disappear from the normal list and move to the top.
You can also pin contacts to the top of the Messages screen with a swipe. To do this, swipe completely from left to right and the chat will be pinned to the top. You can also stop the swipe halfway through and then press the yellow pin to finish pinning.
Up to nine chats at a time
The Messages app can hold up to nine pinned chats. It does not matter whether it is a text message conversation or an iMessage conversation. You can also adjust the order. To do this, simply hold down a chat and move the icon to the position you want.
As soon as you try to lock more than nine chats, your iPhone or iPad will give a warning. Do you still want to pin one more chat? Then you first have to delete another conversation. You do this by holding down the chat in question for a long time and then choosing ‘Disconnect’. The chat now moves back to the ‘regular’ list.
