Pokémon GO is the game of the moment, but you need a smartphone with mobile internet to play it. However, with an iPad you can also go on a monster hunt, which suddenly makes the game a lot more accessible for children. With these tips you will soon be a Pokémon master on the iPad.
Pokémon GO iPad: this is how it works
Pokémon GO works best on an internet-connected iPhone, of course, but we can imagine a number of situations where you have to rely on an iPad. Parents who also want to let their children play, for example, but want to continue to use their iPhone themselves. Parents with multiple children can use an iPhone and iPad at the same time as a Pokémon GO game console.

If you plan to play Pokémon GO on an iPad, it is important to know if you have an iPad with or without cellular internet. This determines whether you have to pair an iPhone or not. Pokémon GO with 4G is very easy. You pick the app from the App Store, install it and you can start playing just like your iPhone. Since the game requires a mobile internet connection and GPS, and both are present, you do not need to take any further action.
If you have an iPad without mobile internet, it will be a slightly different story. In that case, you need an iPhone with mobile internet that you connect to the iPad with a personal hotspot. This way you pass on the internet and the iPad can still connect online. Not ideal, but good enough if you as a parent connect your iPhone to your child’s iPad.
- Open the Settings on your iPhone;
- Select ‘Personal Hotspot’ and set the switch to green;
- Remember the password that is on the iPhone screen.
Now that your iPhone is set up correctly, you can grab the Pokémon GO iPad that you want to connect to the internet in this way.
- Open the Settings on your iPad;
- Select WiFi and tap the iPhone that appears in the overview;
- Enter the password shown on the iPhone screen.
Now that your iPad is connected to the internet in a roundabout way, you can play Pokémon GO. You only miss the GPS, so you will have to rely on the location determination via WiFi routers. However, it is possible to play the game in this way.
Only play on WiFi
If you don’t have mobile internet, you can of course just play Pokémon GO on Wi-Fi alone. You will then have to look for WiFi hotspots around you, such as at the station, a restaurant or some places in the city center. With a little help from Lures in the game, you can even get the Pokémon to come to you, instead of having you go their way.
