Turn on active noise cancellation on AirPods Pro: 2 ways
The AirPods Pro are the most advanced earbuds that Apple has made to date. The most notable addition is without a doubt active noise cancellation, or in English active noise cancellation.
The earplugs filter out ambient noise because one microphone continuously monitors outside noise, and one microphone keeps an eye on your ear. In this way, it is continuously checked whether the ambient noise is efficiently filtered out.
This is how you turn on active noise cancellation on the AirPods Pro:
- If you have not already done so, connect your AirPods Pro to your iPhone or iPad;
- Gently squeeze the stem of one of the AirPods to turn on active noise cancellation;
- You will hear a sound as soon as the function is switched on: from now on ambient noise is filtered.
When you hold the stem again for a moment, you switch back to the ‘Transparency Mode’. You use this in traffic, for example, because you continue to hear ambient sounds.
You can also link actions to touching AirPods yourself. To do this, go to the Settings app, tap ‘Bluetooth’ and tap the information sign next to your AirPods. You can then specify per AirPod what happens when you touch the stem.

Turn on noise cancellation via iPhone and iPad
You can also switch between the different audio modes of the AirPods Pro in a different way. You do not have to touch the stems.
- Open the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad;
- Press and hold the volume bar (containing the AirPods Pro icon) for a moment until a new window opens;
- Press one of the buttons at the bottom to turn on Active Noise Cancellation or Transparency mode.
