Tomorrow, the maximum speed limit in much of Amsterdam will increase to 30 km/h

In Amsterdam, motorists can ‘enjoy’ the 50 km/h speed limit in a large part of the city today, because tomorrow it will be a different story.

Tomorrow, Friday December 8, is the day. The maximum speed will then be reduced to 30 km/h in a large part of Amsterdam. The reduction in the maximum speed applies 80 percent of the roads in Amsterdam. In total this concerns 270 kilometers of motorway. Photo 2 shows the current situation (blue is 30 km/h), photo 3 shows the new situation. According to the municipality, the main reason for the reduction is to increase road safety and reduce noise pollution.

According to the municipality of Amsterdam, 67 percent of Amsterdam residents find traffic in the area unsafe or very unsafe, it reports. A.D. 83 percent of Amsterdam residents also point to speeding as the main cause of the many accidents. It is estimated that lowering the maximum speed to 30 km/h would reduce the number of accidents by 20 to 30 percent. Nowadays, there are approximately twenty fatalities in Amsterdam every year, while 800 people are injured in traffic.

It was previously announced that a total of around 4,400 new signs will have to be placed to indicate the new speed limit. There are still stickers on these signs, they will be removed next night. Anyone who thinks that Amsterdam will still be lenient for those who do not immediately adhere to the new speed limit is wrong. The municipality uses (flex) speed cameras and radar cars, among other things, to enforce the change. So-called smiley posts and a savings post are also used, with which money is collected for the neighborhood if driving behavior is good.
