TomTom comes with a new generation of navigation system

TomTom presents a new generation of its navigation service integrated in infotainment systems. From now on, this makes full use of cloud data to make navigation as accurate as possible.

The Dutch TomTom is still an important player in the field of navigation systems for the automotive sector. For example, at Peugeot, Opel, Renault, Fiat and Alfa Romeo you can find integrated navigation software (in-dash navigation) from TomTom in the infotainment system. To this end, TomTom has now developed a new generation of its navigation that should take the speed, ease of use and possibilities to a higher level.

The latest navigation software is more ‘cloud-based’, which means that when it is online it uses data from other users as efficiently as possible to obtain reliable route information and, for example, calculate faster routes. If other users are stuck somewhere, the navigation will look for a different route for you. You do not necessarily always have to stay connected to the internet, because there is also the option to download maps and navigate offline. Of course, if you do have an internet connection, you can download up-to-date maps to keep the navigation up-to-date.

There is more news regarding the visual possibilities with the new navigation system. It looks completely fresh and should be easier to operate. The navigation data such as route instructions and traffic information can also be seamlessly displayed in, for example, the car’s digital instrumentation or on a head-up display. Of course, that depends on whether the car in which the system is integrated supports such things, but TomTom is at least ready for it. It can also handle Amazon Alexa, Cerence and Houndify voice assistants. Especially the former can be found in more and more cars.

The system also works more closely with data from the car, such as range. This can be a solution, especially for electric cars. The navigation system will warn you in advance if your destination is further away than the expected driving range and then suggest some locations where you can top up or refuel. You also get direct information about the current charging or fuel prices to make your choice easier. If you make a choice, TomTom will include that petrol station or charging point as a stopover in your route. TomTom naturally hopes that this navigation service will become even more attractive to other parties in addition to its current customers in the automotive sector. Don’t be surprised if you eventually find it in more cars.
