Cherries cause bellyache – at least according to a popular wisdom that many people probably know from their childhood. You can find out what science says about it and what you should consider accordingly.

From June to August there is a cherry season in Germany. Then you can buy the sweet little fruits from regional cultivation or snack straight from the tree. However, according to parents and grandparents, we should never eat too many cherries and also do not eat the fruit together with water-otherwise there are gastrointestinal problems.

But how much truth is this popular wisdom actually? Can cherries really cause bellyache?

Cherries and stomach ache: What is it about folk wisdom?

The fact that cherries trigger stomach ache is actually not completely out of air. For the phenomenon, the Federal Center for Nutrition (BZFE) names several reasons:

1. Heaf -mushrooms on cherries

Yeast mushrooms often sit on the shell of the cherries. In our body, the fructose contained then meet in the cherries and the yeast mushrooms.

Especially when you have consumed larger quantities of the popular stone fruit, it happens easily that the mushrooms ferment the sugar into alcohol. This process creates carbon dioxide as a by -product. This can lead to flatulence and abdominal pain.

2. Water dilutes gastric acid

If you also drank water, the flatulence may be particularly strong. Because the water leads to the stomach acid diluted and the mushrooms can be killed less efficiently.

3. Water accelerates process

According to another theory, the water mainly causes the cherries to pass the stomach faster and thus get directly into the intestine. In the intestine, fermentation processes then take place, which can also lead to flatulence and abdominal swing.

Incidentally, the fact that older generations of the post -war period in particular warn of the combination of cherries and water are more likely to have a different reason according to the BZfe: the quality of the drinking water was much worse in the past. At the time, due to the germs it contains, the water caused stomach problems without cherries. That’s why you don’t have to worry today. Because you can safely drink tap water in Germany.
