Top 10: Most cars are destroyed here

It will happen to you, you come out in the morning and see that someone has destroyed your car. A window has been broken, a tire has been punctured, a thick scratch has been pulled over the doors or your car has even been set on fire. Unfortunately, thousands of people are confronted with this every year. Now we also know where most of the destruction takes place. So be careful.

For the first time in years, the number of car vandals has increased again in the Netherlands. A disturbing development. The number of registered vandalism increased by a fairly solid 4.7 percent compared to 2018, according to figures from Independer, which relies on the registration of vandalism at police units.

Not surprisingly, most of the destruction takes place in the largest cities. After all, there are also most cars. There are major differences between the cities when it comes to development compared to last year. The number of vandalism increased sharply, especially in The Hague and Utrecht. Incidentally, the largest increase was not noted in one of the cities in the top 10, but in the municipality of Ede. As many as 200 more vandals were registered in 2019 than a year earlier. The number also increased sharply in Veenendaal (+120) and Sittard-Geleen (+105).

As said, it was to be expected that in absolute numbers the municipalities of the major cities in particular would emerge. Therefore, it is certainly interesting to look at the ratios to the amount of cars present. Then other ‘winners’ emerge. The risk of vandalism to cars appears to be relatively greatest in Den Helder. Incidentally, we see that, in addition to a number of smaller municipalities, the large cities also pass by here. Also in Ede, thanks to the sharp increase, statistically there is now a lot of chance of vandalism on cars. Let’s hope it decreases again this year.
