Top speed Renault and Dacia limited to 180 km / h

An interesting statement from Luca de Meo, CEO of Groupe Renault. De Meo says that no Renault or Dacia model will soon be able to exceed 180 km / h. The goal: to improve road safety.

During a shareholders meeting, Renault CEO Luca de Meo made a statement that can count on two reactions. The crack noses among us are horrified at the thought, the other side of the car country will undoubtedly find it a logical step: in the future, no Renault or Dacia car will go faster than 180 km / h. The upcoming electric scion that Renault will soon add to the Mégane family, will be the first Renault to have top speed electronically controlled. The production version of the Mégane eVision Concept, which is planned for 2022, will be able to reach a top speed of up to 160 km / h, according to De Meo. In addition, Renault will soon be introducing smart adaptive cruise control that adjusts the speed based on information on traffic signs and information that the system extracts from, among other things, the navigation system. Thanks to this system called Safety Coach, the Renault and Dacia models equipped with it will soon brake for bends and things like roundabouts.

Safety Coach goes a step further. The system would also hand out ‘safety scores’ to drivers. These scores are tracked so that deviations from the norm and ‘unsafe driving behavior’ can be traced. According to the CEO, this can result in lower premiums for ‘safe drivers’ in collaboration with insurance companies, French media report. The ANWB, among others, already offers car insurance that gives you a discount on your insurance premium ‘with a good driving style’.

Since 2020, Volvo has already limited the top speed of its cars to 180 km / h. It is not yet known whether the speed limit announced by De Meo will also apply to Alpine cars.
