Toyota Europe can look back on a positive first quarter. It records sales growth compared to the same period last year and saw its market share rise to record highs.
Toyota is doing good business on our continent. Compared to the first three months of 2020, it posted sales growth of 6 percent here. A total of 287,678 Toyotas were sold in Europe in the past quarter. Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus also sold more cars, 19,071 in total, 4 percent more than last year in Q1. No less than 56 percent of new cars sold had a hybrid powertrain, which is a record for Toyota. The growth is striking, as overall new car sales in Europe are still suffering from the corona crisis and on average still significantly fewer cars are sold than last year in this period.
The proportion of new cars sold with a hybrid powertrain is not the only record, as Toyota’s market share was also higher in the past quarter than it ever was in Europe. With a market share of 6.6 percent (0.1 percent more than last year), Toyota now occupies the second place in the top of the best-selling car brands in Europe. That would mean that the only Volkswagen has to tolerate. The Toyota’s Corolla, Yaris and RAV4 – in that order – have been the best-selling Toyota models in Europe in recent times.
