The time when you bought a new A-segmenter for less than 10 grand is definitely behind us. Still, the all-new Toyota Aygo X is still a lot cheaper than the Yaris it shares its base with, while the equipment has been given a major boost. Is the basis sufficient?

Toyota Aygo X – €15,995

Almost 16 grand. Not so long ago that was a very hefty amount for a city car, now you get the entry-level version at Toyota. Still, it’s actually stupid to say that. Everything is getting more expensive, and the Aygo offers for this amount at least a significantly grown body compared to the predecessor, a serious Yaris platform and also a very decent standard equipment. For example, we have known from the start that Toyota assembles a package of safety and comfort-enhancing items as standard, including a lane assistant (!) and adaptive cruise control (!!). Yes, standard!

Air conditioning is also simply present, as are central locking and electric windows (front, because rear hinged windows). With that, the most important things seem ticked off and we can perhaps conclude that such a basic Aygo is an excellent choice.

gaping hole

However, there is still plenty of reason to step up. The main one is the gaping hole in the middle of the dashboard, where literally every other version gets a neat touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The knowledge that there are actually speakers in the doors may help against loneliness, but in concrete terms those speakers mean little if there is nothing to control them.

10 percent more

The second trim level, the Aygo X Play, provides for €17,595 not only in the aforementioned multimedia system with reversing camera, but also in electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a nicer poker and speedometer. That might be a better choice, although €1,600 more in this case is really 10 percent. However, the chance that you will sit better after this investment is also greater, because the Aygo only gets a height-adjustable driver’s seat from ‘Play’.

White, gray or black

On the outside, the ‘damage’ is not too bad. Both simple Aygos have halogen headlights and hubcaps. The real entry-level ‘distinguish’ itself with pure, natural and unsprayed handles and door mirrors, parts that are provided with a layer of lacquer in all other versions. There is very little choice in terms of colors for both versions. Besides the free white, there is only gray or black. This also applies to the variant above, the middle of the range. The beige, green, blue and red shown in the press photos are reserved for the most expensive Envy and Limited versions.

Would you go for the slip-on, or take the step to the Play? We would like to hear it!

You know what’s even more affordable? A used Aygo! You’ll find it here.
