When you hear the term ‘enthusiast’ you may not immediately think of the Toyota Carina, an ordinary car in the 80s and 90s. The model has now become quite rare, especially in the condition in which this red copy is. You have to pull out your wallet for that.
The Toyota Carina was quite a popular car in the Netherlands. In terms of sales total, the model, which was available in our country from 1983 to 1997 as a sedan, liftback and station wagon, is in sixth place with 69,972 copies of all Toyotas. This puts the Carina ahead of the Auris and Prius, among others. There are now only a handful of copies of this number left. The AutoWeek used finder only shows two copies: this red one from 1992, which we highlight in this section, and this gray one from 1996. They have one important similarity: both copies come from their first owner.

The latter also explains why this Carina still looks very tight. Its red paint is not discolored – unusual for a car from that time – and the interior also still looks great. In the 29 years that the Carina spent with its first and as yet only owner, it covered only 46,849 kilometers. Under the hood of the Carina is a 1.6 four-cylinder with 116 hp. As an XLi, it was one of the cheapest variants of the Carina. This copy cost €16,624 at the time. There is not a lot of luxury, apart from electrically operated windows all around and a sliding roof. The steering wheel forms a nice contrast with today’s cars: nowhere to be seen.
Since the Carina is at the Toyota dealership, the question arises whether the former owner took something new home and exchanged the Carina on it. What we do know is that given its condition, this specimen deserves an enthusiast as the next owner. It has to be, because with a price of €8,901 this Carina is certainly not a bargain. Who will put this amount on the table and give the Carina just as nice a home as it has been in recent decades?
