Toyota Celica Coupe (1986) – Into the Wild

Looking for a new Toyota Celica in 1986? Then you had the choice of two variants: a two-door coupé or a three-door liftback. The first was as 1.6 ST the cheapest way to get into the sporty oriented Japanese. We now have that version in front of the lens.

Forum user and frequent uploader ‘Rutger DC’ spotted this copy in a residential area. The Celica CoupĂ© can safely be called special, because the liftback was considerably more popular at the time. It was also available in many more variants. Where the Celica CoupĂ© was only available as 1.6 ST and 1.6 GTi from 1985 to 1990, the liftback was also available as 2.0 GTi and 2.0i Turbo 4WD. The car in question is a 1.6 ST CoupĂ©, with a starting price of €16,629 the cheapest way to get into a Celica. As a liftback, the 1.6 ST cost at least €17,536, a difference of €907. The 1.6 ST is less smooth with 86 hp than its appearance suggests: the sprint to 100 km/h takes 12.4 seconds and at 175 km/h the cake is over.

Incidentally, predecessors of this Celica Coupé have already been featured in the section: this third-generation copy from 1982 and that of the second generation from 1980. Even the primal Celica is represented as a coupé. So now we can add the fourth generation to the list. Also nice: this liftback from 1979.

This Celica has unfortunately seen better days. Its red paint has faded and is peeling off quite a bit. where parts of the primer are even visible on the side. The steel wheels without hubcaps contribute to the rat look of this copy, but a set of hubcaps wouldn’t look out of place. We cannot of course judge from the photos what the car looks like under the skin. In any case, the Celica has a valid MOT until May next year. The last owner has owned this original Dutch copy since May last year. Perhaps this copy will still get the love it deserves?
