Toyota Corolla Cross 2.0 Hybrid – Farewell Endurance Test

Relaxed all-rounder that is also sufficient as a 1.8 Hybrid

The Toyota Corolla Cross spent seven months as an endurance tester at the AutoWeek editorial office. We drove the 2.0 Hybrid as a Launch Edition, the most powerful version. Initially, the Corolla Cross was only available with the 197 hp hybrid powertrain. Later came the 1.8 Hybrid. And the week we drove next to it provided interesting insights. But we have done more.

Placing such a newcomer in an increasingly full Toyota SUV range was one of the goals of this endurance test. To do this properly, we brought in a Yaris Cross and a RAV4. The Corolla Cross is closer to the Yaris Cross than to the RAV4, but it operates a segment higher than the SUV based on the small Toyota. The difference in luggage space between the Yaris Cross and the Corolla Cross is small. The high variant of the Corolla does score points on the back seat, but it is certainly not a spacious car within its segment. However, the Corolla Cross is more comfortable and has heavier engines. The RAV4 is a big step bigger, and this is also reflected in the engines. The 2.5 Hybrid is on an even higher level than the 2.0 Hybrid that you can get in the Corolla Cross. That engine version made it difficult to make a comparison test with a competitor.

The endurance test already started against a Nissan Qashqai

Before we started the endurance test, we had already placed a 2.0 Hybrid next to a Nissan Qashqai e-Power, but most competitors in this division are fine with 150 hp. For example, with a Skoda Karoq. In the comparison with the 1.8 Hybrid, we discovered that the 140 hp hybrid offers sufficient power. Because the MPV is also extinct at Toyota, we sought out a Toyota Verso driver with the Corolla Cross, who was charmed by the driving characteristics and the high seat but lacked a lot of space.
