Toyota Corolla Cross – Welcome Endurance Test

As a 2.0 Hybrid power in abundance

There is no shortage of crossovers and SUVs at Toyota. Yet there was still room in the range for a newcomer. The Toyota Corolla Cross is our latest addition to the endurance test fleet. That is also a great opportunity to get acquainted with Toyota’s latest generation hybrid powertrain.

Let’s first clarify Toyota’s range of crossovers and SUVs. At the bottom of the ladder you will find the Yaris Cross, which is 4.17 m long and has a wheelbase of 2.56 m. You can compare it with peers such as the Renault Captur and the Peugeot 2008.

A size bigger is the C-HR, with a length of 4.39 m and a wheelbase of 2.69 m. Its sloping roofline makes it not very practical, which is why there was room for the Corolla Cross. It is on the same GA-C platform as the CH-R, and therefore the wheelbase is the same. At 4.46 meters, the Corolla Cross is only slightly longer than the CH-R, but much higher. While with the CH-R you hit the highest point at 1.56m, the Corolla goes up to 1.62m. Plus, it doesn’t have a steeply sloping roofline, which is good news for the rear seat passengers. Toyota’s largest SUVs are called RAV4 (4.60 m), Land Cruiser (4.84 m) and Highlander (4.97 m). There is also the fully electric bZ4X of 4.69 m.

Corolla Cross is the better brother of the C-HR

In short: our new endurance tester, the Corolla Cross, is the better and more practical little brother of the CH-R. With braver we mean the appearance, because where the CH-R with its tightly cut bodywork is quite distinctive, we cannot find the design of the Corolla Cross exciting with the best will in the world. Fortunately, our endurance tester was delivered in the clear color Cobalt Blue Metallic and not in black or gray.

Always hybrid, there will also be a 1.8

What kind of meat do we have in the tub? The full name of our newcomer is Toyota Corolla Cross 2.0 High Power Hybrid Launch Edition. The last two words of his last name refer to the most expensive and most extensive equipment level, which includes leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, 360-degree camera, JBL Premium audio system and an integrated Toyota Smart Connect + navigation system. That drives the price up to €45,695, and then our test car also has a panoramic roof (an option of €1,295) and metallic paint (€895). For whom all that is too much of a good thing: the basic version, called Active, is available from €38,695. The Corolla Cross is now only available as a 2.0 Hybrid, but there will also be a 1.8 Hybrid. It is the fifth generation of this powertrain, with which it is a step further than the CH-R. Where the differences lie exactly, we will discuss in detail another time. However, we have already drawn up a list of what we will be doing with our new endurance tester in the near future. First of all, we want to entice the owner of a Verso to go around the block with the new Corolla Cross. We have heard that many Verso drivers would like to switch to this model, hence. We are curious whether the newcomer will appeal to the Verso audience. To pick up on the beginning of this article: we are going to look for the exact differences between the Yaris Cross, the Corolla Cross and the RAV4 in practice. What’s the best buy? Of course we bring in a direct competitor. No Nissan Qashqai, because we already put it next to it last year – we thought the Toyota was the best then. You will also receive further text and explanation about the hybrid powertrain and we will also take you for a ride to the Alps. Our first impressions of the Corolla Cross are positive, we’ll get into more detail shortly.
