The sportier brother
Toyota launched a new Crown model family in July last year, and we also briefly saw the sportiest of the bunch: the Crown Sport. It has now been fully revealed.
Last summer we were digitally introduced to the all-new Toyota Crown, which was unfortunately not intended for us: the Crown Crossover. A hybrid, high-profile sedan that ranks quite high in Toyota’s model range. The Crown Crossover passes us by and that is quite a loss, because Toyota comes with a real family with several Crown models. The Crown Sedan, Crown Estate and Crown Sport would follow. The latter has now been shown to the world in its home country Japan.
As we could see last year with the prototype (from photo 7), the Crown Sport is getting its own face within the Crown family. The front is more reminiscent of that of the latest Prius, while the Crown Crossover has more of a bZ4X-like nose. In addition, the Crown Sport is equipped with clearly sportier bumpers and up to 21-inch wheels to emphasize its sporty character. In the interior, however, it looks more chic than sporty and the similarities with the interior of the Crown Crossover are unmissable. Here too you will find a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and also many physical buttons.
Although the Crown Sport is also a crossover, according to Toyota, the 4.72 meter long, 1.88 meter wide and almost 1.57 m high Crown Sport is a car that is primarily made for driving pleasure. Things such as an extra sporty chassis and steering rear wheels (Dynamic Rear Steering) should contribute to this. Like the other Crown models, it shares its basis with cars such as the RAV4 and Highlander, which are also available here in the Netherlands, and that also means that it uses well-known technology for the drive. The Toyota Crown Sport will be available on the Japanese market as a likely 234 hp hybrid with a 2.5 four-cylinder as the beating heart and with E-Four all-wheel drive. There will also be a plug-in hybrid version with the 2.5 as the beating heart, about which more will be known later.
Toyota says it will only focus on the Japanese market for the time being and will build 700 units per month. Definitely not a volume model. It will cost the equivalent of €37,566 in his home country.
