“Toyota goes to profitable EVs in three steps”

Koji Sato, the new CEO of Toyota, makes himself heard again. Toyota would like to move to large numbers of profitable EVs in three steps.

Toyota is the largest car brand in the world, but certainly not the first brand to fully work with EVs. The Japanese held off for a long time and only sell their first serious electric car – the bZ4X – in dribs and drabs. Given the huge market for Toyota outside the EV-loving west, that may be understandable, but looking to the future it is also a threat.

The new boss of the brand seems to understand that well. Sato previously announced that it would work on more, better and more attractive EVs and is now pouring those plans into a real three-step plan. According to Automotive News, the first step is already underway, in the form of that bZ4X. Step 2 will follow in 2026, when Toyota launches an entirely new EV platform and wants to have the factory capacity to build 1.5 million EVs worldwide.

A new operating system called Arene must also play an increasingly important role between steps 2 and 3, until everything comes together in the third step in 2030. More efficiency in the powertrain of the cars themselves, but also in the technology around it and in the factories should ensure that Toyota can sell up to 3.5 million EVs per year in an extremely efficient manner, at attractive prices and with a healthy gain.
