Toyota Hilux gets hybrid technology

An electric variant of the Toyota Hilux does not (yet) exist and a plug-in hybrid or even conventional hybrid powertrain is also strange to the robust workhorse. Nevertheless, the Toyota Hilux is now experiencing a certain form of electrification. It gets a mild-hybrid turbodiesel.

Toyota has already shown an electric Hilux and has even announced the arrival of a series of prototypes with a fuel cell on board. For the time being, an electric or even electrified Toyota Hilux is not for sale anywhere in the world, but it will be next year. The Australian branch of Toyota announces the arrival of a mild hybrid powertrain for the Hilux next year.

The Toyota Hilux is for sale in the Netherlands with 150 hp 2.4 and 204 hp powerful 2.8 D-4D diesel engines. At least in Australia, that 2.8 turbo diesel will soon be combined with 48V mild hybrid hardware. The arrival of the mild hybrid system should reduce fuel consumption by about 10 percent, according to Toyota. The Hilux with the 2.8 diesel as it now exists, slurps an average of 9.1-9.5 l / 100 km per 100 kilometers. That would mean that the mild-hybrid Toyota Hilux should be able to score an average consumption of about 8.2 to 8.6. The mild-hybrid Hilux would have a start/stop system as standard. The basic version of the Hilux does not yet have it.

The Dutch importer tells AutoWeek that novelties with regard to the Hilux in Australia always come a little earlier than in Europe. For the time being, the Toyota cannot tell us whether the mild-hybrid powertrain will also be available in Europe, but it seems plausible to us.
