Toyota is on track to overtake General Motors as the largest automaker in the United States. In fact, at the time of writing, Toyota has already overtaken the American group.
Since time immemorial, General Motors has been the king of American sales lists, but that group may have to hand over the baton to Toyota Motor Company at the end of this year. The two companies have released their September sales figures, which also means that it is clear how the brands of the two giants are selling technically. What seems? In the first three quarters of this year, Toyota and Lexus jointly delivered 1,857,884 new cars in the United States. That’s nearly 30 percent more than in the same period last year and nearly 5 percent more than the General Motors brands were able to sell in those nine months.
General Motors’ brands, comprising Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC, delivered 1,777,483 new cars in the first nine months of this year. That number is very close to the 1,776,016 cars that The General delivered in the first three quarters of 2020. The difference is only 0.1 percent.
Toyota’s best-selling model in the United States is currently the RAV4 again. That SUV was already good for 302,574 copies delivered this year. In second place is the Camry with 204,945 units, followed by the Corolla with 166,213 cars. The most popular Lexus is the ES, of which almost 30,000 copies were delivered in the first nine months of this year. Both Toyota and Lexus had their best September ever in the United States.
The absolute sales stunner of General Motors is, how could it be otherwise, the Silverado. The model line is already good for 414,389 delivered units this year. With 61,179 cars delivered, the Encore GX has proven to be the most popular Buick and at Cadillac it is the Escalade (30,841 copies) that can call itself the leader of the sales list. At GMC, the Sierra, the brother of the Silverado, is on the sales table with 191,186 delivered cars. The Ford Motor Company delivery counter currently stands at 1,397,504 cars.
