Toyota partly shuts down Japanese production after earthquake

Toyota is temporarily stopping some of its domestic production due to the earthquake in Japan. According to the car manufacturer, this is mainly due to problems at suppliers, resulting in a shortage of parts. Toyota does not report how much production is now missing.

No fewer than 14 of the 28 production lines that Toyota has in Japan will be shut down. Affected models include the C-HR, RAV4, 4Runner and Harrier. At Lexus, the LS, IS, RC, NX, UX, CT, ES and RX represent a much higher proportion of the total number of models. The closure will last at least until February 20, but according to Automotive News Toyota is still thinking about when production can be resumed. The factories of Toyota themselves were not affected by the earthquake, the problem lies with some suppliers who have been damaged. As a result, there is a shortage of certain parts. Toyota has not released any further details about this.

According to Toyota, the problems with suppliers do not endanger production outside Japan. The current shortage of microchips also does not think it will be bothered in the short term, the company reported in the publication of the latest quarterly figures. Moreover, according to analysts, Toyota seems to be recovering faster than the competition, especially in the United States and China, the brand is benefiting from the improving car market.
