By Dutch standards, a Toyota Hilux is already quite a beast, but in the United States, pick-ups in the Hilux segment have much larger alternatives. For example, at Ford this is the F-150 and at Toyota the mighty Tundra. That Tundra is now completely renewed and looks meaner than ever.

If you keep a close eye on the car news on this website, the appearance of the new Toyota Tundra may look familiar. In June, Toyota already showed a first photo of the third generation Tundra. From that moment on it was immediately clear that the completely redesigned and now redesigned Tundra looks much more aggressive than its predecessor. Toyota has now released Tundra in its entirety.

In terms of design, the new Tundra is completely contemporary, which means that the round and still somewhat friendly shapes that were introduced on the outgoing Tundra presented in 2007 are done with. The new Tundra looks as if it prefers to swallow its fellow road users together with the necessary audiovisual drama with its huge gaping mouth. The new Toyota Tundra has an enormous grille that covers almost the entire width of the front and optically extends all the way to the bottom of the bumper, although the latter is of course not quite the case. Toyota has the new Tundra further firmly set and almost square wheel arches. We find more angularity in the ascending line at the bottom of the rear door. As is often the case with pick-ups, the rear is less impressively designed, although you could call the design of the LED taillights – especially for a Tundra – fairly bombastic.

Just like the exterior, the interior of the new Tundra is also interlarded with sturdy, angular shapes. This design-technical ruggedness is combined with modern gadgets such as a multimedia screen up to 14 inches and an optional digital instrumentation with a diameter of 12.3 inches. More modernism can be seen under the hood. Unlike the outgoing Tundra, which was only available with a V8 in its last years of life, Toyota only supplies six-cylinder units in the new Tundra. The least potent of the bunch is a 3.5 that delivers 395 hp and 650 Nm. The 3.5, accompanied by two turbos, is also available in combination with a hybrid system. In that configuration, the Tundra is 443 hp and 790 Nm strong. That variant, just like the non-hybrid version with a ten-speed automatic transmission, provides the Tundra with a maximum towing weight of no less than 5,444 kilos.

The new Tundra will not come to the Netherlands, but will of course compete again in the United States with cars such as the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500. For the time being, it will only be available on the American market with four doors, although a variant of this probably only get two small copies that hinge at the back. Toyota also has a fierce TRD (Pro) version on the menu that is a little 3 centimeters higher on its legs and has a modified chassis.
