Toyota unveils Le Mans racer with hydrogen combustion engine

Toyota is not only in Le Mans this weekend to compete in the 24-hour race, but also to unveil the next generation of its Le Mans racer. Meet the Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept, an endurance racer with an internal combustion engine that burns hydrogen instead of petrol.

Toyota and Le Mans as well as Toyota and hydrogen is a combination that has often paid off to date. With the second-generation Toyota Mirai, the brand is marketing a large-scale car with a hydrogen fuel cell for the second time, and on the Circuit de la Sarthe – where Le Mans is held – the Japanese have already scored the necessary successes. Also this year and this weekend, the brand is participating in the long-distance race and with a hybrid racer in the hypercar class, but that is not the only reason for Toyota to act de presence to give.

The brand is also there to present its next generation Le Mans racer to the world. With the name Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept, with which the brand wants to compete for the prizes from 2026, Toyota is taking its LMP racer into the ‘zero-emission’ era. That car has a hydrogen combustion engine on board, which makes it suitable for driving in the hydrogen class that does not yet exist in three years’ time. From 2030, all Le Mans participating cars in the fastest class must be powered by hydrogen (and electricity), so you can count on seeing more racers with such a powertrain in the coming years. Toyota reports in any case nicely on time.
