Toyota the largest in the world
Toyota Motor Europe had a record year in Europe in 2023, but Toyota Motor Corporation in turn managed to break an even more important sales record. Never before has the company sold as many cars worldwide as last year.
In 2023, Toyota Motor Europe delivered 1,173,419 new cars from car brands Toyota and Lexus on our continent. Of these, almost 1.1 million were Toyotas. Never before have there been so many. Toyota has also broken a record on a larger scale. On a global level, to be precise.
Toyota and Lexus together sold 10,307,395 cars worldwide in 2023. A record number and 7.7 percent more than in 2022. Of those 10.3 million cars, 824,258 (+31.8 percent) were Lexuses. The Volkswagen Group achieved 9.24 million cars in 2023. Toyota Motor Corporation can therefore call itself the largest car manufacturer in the world.
In total, Toyota and Lexus sold more than 1.67 million cars in their home country Japan (+29.8 percent), the remaining 8.64 million were exported (+4.3 percent). Car brand Daihatsu – also part of Toyota – achieved 790,441 (+3.2 percent) sales in 2023, commercial vehicle brand Hino recorded 135,203 sales (-9.8 percent) to its name. If we add the results of Daihatsu and Hino to those of Toyota and Lexus, we arrive at more than 11.23 million cars sold in 2023 (+7.2 percent). That is also a record.
Toyota and Lexus also provide insight into how many electrified cars – and with what type of powertrain – they have delivered. Toyota and Lexus together delivered 3.42 million cars with a conventional hybrid powertrain last year. That was over 31 percent more than in 2022. A modest 26,859 cars had a mild-hybrid drivetrain (+494.2 percent) while 124,755 cars (+38.1 percent) were a plug-in. Toyota delivered a total of 3,391 hydrogen cars (Mirai). Together, Toyota and Lexus sold 104,018 electric cars worldwide (+325.2 percent).
