Mass production together with Japanese partner
Solid state batteries seem to be the holy grail in the car world, but Toyota seems to have found it. The brand announces that it will put solid-state batteries into practice in four to five years. Not much later they have to be produced on a large scale.
Toyota and Idemitsu Kosan – a major Japanese supplier of petroleum and petrochemical products – have signed an agreement that should make it possible to produce solid state batteries on a large scale in a number of years.
Toyota expects to launch the solid state batteries around 2027-2028. The goal is to actually produce solid state batteries on a large scale shortly. Compared to more conventional current lithium-ion batteries, solid state batteries would not only charge faster, but also have a higher energy density. With a comparable size, solid state batteries should therefore have a higher capacity than, for example, lithium-ion batteries.
Together with Idemitsu Kosan, Toyota will develop the materials required for the batteries as ‘solid sulphide electrolytes’. The two companies will also set up a supply chain together. According to the company, Idemitsu has been working on the development of solid state batteries since 2001. Toyota started developing these ‘solid batteries’ in 2006. Earlier this year, Toyota already indicated that it expects to launch electric cars equipped with solid state batteries with ranges of 1,000 and even 1,200 kilometers.
