Toyota’s future plans on the street: this is coming

It sometimes happens that a brand highlights its plans for the future in a confidential meeting and a present secretly shares a photo of it. That now seems to be the case with Toyota, which gives us more clarity about the future of the brand.

Of course it is always a little bit of a blow, but it still seems that the leaked plans are official. Thanks to Allcarnews we not only see a picture of a timeline of Toyota, but also additional information. It seems to be mainly aimed at the American market, but there is also interesting news for the Netherlands.

Compact crossover

First of all, the new compact crossover based on the new Yaris. It is planned for next fall, according to the presentation. The as-yet-unveiled newcomer should have shone on the Geneva show floor. After cancellation, the disclosure has been postponed. We are still in the dark. In any case, the presentation already shows that the compact crossover only comes as a hybrid. The AWD-i system will also be available, allowing the hybrid to send power to the front and rear wheels.

GT86

Furthermore, there is an interesting name in the timeline for the summer of 2021: the 86. Yes, a successor to the GT86. Last summer, both Toyota and Subaru already indicated that they would come up with a successor to the GT86 and BRZ respectively, now we know that we will have to wait for that for a while, but that is certainly something to look forward to. The plans presented would show that the GT86 now has a 255 hp power source and is on a completely new platform. In terms of power, the GT86 would in that case be right next to the four-cylinder version of the Supra, but the latter still has the six-cylinder to distinguish itself in terms of power.

C-HR / C SUV

A little later, in the third quarter of 2021, another SUV / crossover from Toyota will arrive. The brand describes it provisionally as ‘CUV’. We assume that this refers to a crossover based on the Corolla and presumably it is the successor (or second generation) of the C-HR. It will be on the market for a good five years by then.

American market

As said, it seems that the presentation of the future plans was intended for the American market, because there is also news for the models that are especially important there. For example, a fully hybrid-powered new Sienna will come onto the market this autumn, the Tundra will enter a new generation at the end of 2021 and a new Sequoia based on that new Tundra will be launched in 2022. The future plans of the Camry are also discussed: it will be refreshed again in 2021, but in 2024 there will be a completely new generation.
