Toyota’s new top SUV may come as a convertible

The Toyota Century will soon also be available as an SUV for the first time, but it could be that the Century will soon also be a convertible. Not just any one, but a cut-up SUV! Toyota hints at the possible arrival of such a model.

Toyota’s absolute top sedan has been the Century for many years. Since this week, the Century has an SUV namesake. The ‘Toyota Century SUV’ will soon be available as a sporty GR, which not only distinguishes itself from the non-GRs with a sportier design, but also appears to be the only version to have sliding rear doors. But there is more interesting to report about the Century SUV. Toyota is clearly hinting at the arrival of a convertible based on its new luxury top SUV.

During the presentation of the Toyota Century SUV, Simon Humphries – Toyota’s Senior General Manager of Design, Head of Design and Chief Branding Officer – said the possibilities with the new Century are ‘endless’ and ‘open to discussion’. Humphries speaks those words as a gigantic image of what is clearly a cut-up Century SUV appears behind him. It is not inconceivable that the arrival of such a variant is currently one of the agenda items during the discussions of Toyota’s upper management.

Completely cut-out SUVs are a rarity. Yet we have seen several examples of this in the recent past. For example, Land Rover sold the previous generation Range Rover Evoque as a Convertible and Volkswagen now has the T-Roc Cabrio on the price list. Nissan also immortalized the Murano by supplying an open version in the form of the Murano CrossCabriolet.
