Import via cable or card reader
Photos and videos can be transferred to the computer with a cable and via a card reader. In this article we describe both ways.
Import photos via cable: step 1
With a camera you often receive a cable to transfer images to your computer. Watch our video below to see how to connect the camera to the computer via a cable. Then continue with our instructions.
When your camera is connected via a cable and recognized by the computer, you will be presented with so-called device options. click on Import images and videos. A Windows wizard will help you import the photos.
Import photos via cable: step 2
- Click on the bottom left Import settings to see if this is set as desired.
You then look at the following parts:
- You can see in the picture opposite that images and videos are placed in the ‘My Pictures’ folder. Select the folder behind ‘Import videos to’ if desired My videos.
- Specify the type of folder name you want. For example, on ‘Date Imported and Label’ or ‘Date Taken and Label’.
- Indicate what type of file name you want. For example, ‘Label’ or ‘Original file name’. Below you can see an example.
- At the ‘Other options’ you can still check or uncheck various options. For example, whether you want to rotate the images during import so that they are immediately correct.
- click on OK.
Import photos via cable: step 3
You can optionally add a label to the recordings being imported. The folder where the photos will be stored will then be given this name.
- Enter a label if necessary.
- click on Import.
Import photos via cable: step 4
The recordings are imported. You have the option to check Delete photos after import. But the recordings are then permanently deleted from the camera. We therefore recommend doing this on the camera itself if you are sure that the photos are correct on the computer.
The recordings can be found in the Explorer under ‘My images’ or ‘My videos’.
Import photos via card reader: step 1
You can transfer photos and videos from the camera to the PC using a card reader. Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a card reader. Then connect the card reader to the computer. We show how it works in the video below. Then continue with our instructions.
When you connect the memory card reader to the computer, it will appear as ‘Removable Disk’ in File Explorer. click on Removable disk and the folders on your memory card are displayed. Folder names may differ from camera to camera.
Pay attention: it is also possible that a window will open directly for you to import the photos. Then you can do the same as described from Step 1 under ‘Import photos via cable’.
Import photos via card reader: step 2
Navigate to your recordings within the ‘Removable Disk’. Double-click a folder to open it. In our example, you can see that the recordings are in the ‘DCIM > 139 Canon’ folder. If necessary, make a note of in which folder you will find the recordings for the next time.
You can now copy your recordings to a folder on your computer’s hard drive. For example in the folder ‘My pictures’.
You can read more about working with the Explorer in the article ‘The Explorer’.
Import photos via card reader: step 3
Before removing the USB plug from the computer, it is good to disconnect the USB connection from the computer. You do this as follows:
- Go to the Explorer.
- Right click on the correct one Removable disk.
- click on eject.
