23 cents per kilometer

A higher tax-free travel allowance may come earlier than planned. The government will look into the possibilities of bringing the planned increase forward.
State Secretary Marnix van Rij (Taxes) wants to see whether it is possible to increase the tax-free travel allowance earlier than the cabinet had planned. He promised the House of Representatives this, after various parties had requested this. “Technically you could do that from 1 July,” says Van Rij. He wants to see what it means exactly if the cabinet were to decide to do so. “I would like to say: let’s look at it seriously. But then a cover has to be found,” says Van Rij. If the cabinet takes such a measure, less will come in. Money has to come from somewhere else.
Parties in the House had proposed the early increase to ease the pain of the high fuel prices. Van Rij also sees ‘a great deal of responsibility’ on employers. “They must therefore grant this tax-free travel allowance to employees.” The government already intended to gradually increase the tax-free travel allowance from 19 cents per kilometer to 23 cents. There is also a good chance that an increase to 23 cents is not yet considered sufficient by various parties. For example, the Business Drivers’ Association recently calculated that 39 cents per kilometer would be realistic. The current 19 cents date from 2006. Since then, driving has become considerably more expensive.
