Trial started with car insurance linked to driver’s license

Car insurance is normally linked to a car and not so much to the person who drives the car. Insurer Aon is now starting a trial with insurance that is linked to a person and applies to all cars that that person drives. It does this in view of the (expected increase in) the use of shared cars.

In the eyes of some, car ownership will disappear in the future and that of course also has consequences for how car insurance is viewed. At the moment you still insure your own car, but what if you are dependent on shared cars? Shared cars are currently still insured by the company that offers them, which is unfavorable according to insurer Aon. After all, some do not treat them too economically and although damage can be recovered from users at the deductible, this makes shared cars increasingly difficult to insure. And of course higher premiums lead to higher rental costs. This in turn affects the attractiveness of shared cars.

That is why Aon is now starting a trial in which the insurance is linked to a person via the driver’s license or identity card and not to the shared car that that person is driving, the company reports. AD. The idea behind this is that people will be more careful with shared cars and that insurance costs will no longer have a negative effect on the rental prices of shared cars.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Municipality of Rotterdam and the RDW are participating in the pilot. The pilot will last three to six months and will involve several hundred users of shared cars. Aon wants to use this to map out what this does to driving behavior and possible damage. Those who behave well can receive a lower premium or be offered a more luxurious shared car at the same rate. In extreme cases, broken drivers can be excluded from the use of shared cars and, for example, only rent shared bicycles.
