Troubleshoot your iPhone or Mac with Self Service Diagnostics

For a few years now, it has been possible to repair your own Apple device in case of problems thanks to the Self Service program. Since this year, it is also possible to detect problems with your iPhone or Mac in advance with Self Service Diagnostics.

This is an online tool that allows you as a user to check which parts of your iPhone, Mac or Studio Display require repair. Previously, the tool was only used by employees in Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers, but now everyone can use it.

Self Service Diagnostics

With a simple online tool, users can easily diagnose issues with their Apple device so they can repair their product themselves. Apple Diagnostics for Self-Service Repair is a free tool that you can activate manually.

  • Note the serial number of your device
  • Open the Self Service Diagnostics tool
  • Select a desired device
  • Put your device in diagnostic mode
  • Follow the steps on the screen
  • Select a desired part
  • Run the diagnosis

Diagnostic Mode for Mac

To diagnose a device, you first need to put it into diagnostic mode. Here’s how to do it for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

  1. Press and hold the Touch ID/power button on your Mac
  2. Release the button when you see ‘Loading boot options…’
  3. When the boot options appear, press and hold Command ⌘ + D on the Mac keyboard to put it into diagnostics mode.
  4. To connect the Mac you’re testing to the Internet via Wi-Fi, choose the network from the Wi-Fi menu in the upper-right corner of the Diagnostics Mode screen.
  5. Select a language and click ‘OK’ on the diagnostic mode screen.

iPhone diagnostic mode

  • Turn off your iPhone or iPad completely
  • Press and hold the volume up button and the volume down button
    While holding down the buttons, connect iPhone to a 20W or higher power adapter or directly to a computer that is turned on and plugged into a power source. Hubs, displays, or other indirect connections are not supported.
  • Release the buttons when the Apple logo appears
  • Diagnostic mode will open, tap the globe to change the language

Testing Apple product for problems

After you’ve completed the steps above, you can test your iPhone, Mac, or Studio Display for a variety of issues. For example, you can test the multi-touch screen, check Face ID, detect dead pixels, etc. Once you’re done, simply restart your device.

Diagnostic suites are available for devices running iOS 17.0, macOS Sonoma 14.1, or later. Beta versions of Apple software are not supported.
