Turn your Mazda MX-5 into a classic F1 racer

Do you happen to own a Mazda MX-5 (NB) in which you no longer see a future? Do not leave your roadster this winter. The MX-5 can act as a donor for a very special kitcar.

Car enthusiast and TV presenter Anthony ‘Ant’ Anstead, known as the tech on television shows Wheeler Dealers and Master Mechanic, opens the door to a new future for end-of-life Mazda’s MX-5. For the Master Mechanic program, Anstead converted a 1950s MG T into a replica of an Alfa Romeo 158, which won several F1 races between 1938 and 1950. The cigar-shaped classic racer, who won 47 of the 54 F1 races in which the car took part, can now also be parked in front of the door.

Dowsetts Classic Cars, a coachbuilder, founded by Anthony Anstead, is launching a kit that allows you to make a replica of the Alfa 158 yourself, using extensive manuals. In this case, not an MG T, but a Mazda MX-5 serves as the basis for the kit car. Those who don’t feel like getting their hands dirty themselves should also be able to purchase ready-made replicas from Dowsett’s Classic Cars. Of course, the MX-5’s four-cylinder simply serves as a power plant, not a small 1.5-liter eight-in-line (!) With supercharger like in the original 158’s.

Kitcar Alfa Romeo 158

Although Techzle has put a line, more information is currently not available. However, there is already talk of a temporary introduction price of € 8,250 converted for the conversion kit. How much space is still available under the Christmas tree?

MX-5

Does an Alfa Romeo replica not warm you up, but do you want something different with your MX-5? Then there is always the Japanese Mitsuoka. The idiosyncratic company offers the Rock Star, a MX-5 of the current generation, dressed like a Corvette C2. Mitsuoka is also the place to go for Himiko, based on the current MX-5, a very distinct ‘modern classic’.
