Ouch! Anyone who has ever cut themselves nasty with a kitchen knife knows that a well-organized pharmacy is worth its weight in gold. Here are four tips to keep in mind.

Tormented by a cough, you hopefully reach into the medicine drawer and realize: crap, the cough syrup expired six months ago. Those who pay some attention to the pharmacy in the household can avoid such situations. That’s how it’s done:

1. Have everything you need ready

According to the Health Knowledge Foundation, medicines for pain, fever, cold symptoms, diarrhea and vomiting belong in the medicine chest. You should also have a remedy for sunburn and minor burns as well as insect bites. Also: bandages and clinical thermometer, tweezers, disposable gloves, disinfectant and scissors.

2. Choose the right place

A lockable medicine cabinet is ideal, advises the Health Knowledge Foundation. At least when there are children in the house, who should never get their hands on medication.

Most medicines must be stored in a cool and dry place so that they do not lose their effectiveness. However, the bathroom cabinet is not the right place for this because of the high humidity. Medicines should also not be stored right next to the heater.

3. Avoid confusion

Anyone who owns a dog or cat often also has medication for the animal. However, the Health Knowledge Foundation advises that these medicines should be stored elsewhere. Otherwise there is a risk of confusion.

4. Check shelf life regularly

In order to keep track of things, you should tidy up your medicine cabinet regularly and also check the expiry dates. Expired medicines should be discarded and replaced.

Good to know: Dressing materials also have an expiry date. If it is exceeded, you can no longer be sure that it is sterile – and according to the Health Knowledge Foundation, you should no longer use it.
