Micro adventure are small experiences to break out of everyday life and discover something new. It is particularly important that the adventures can be implemented spontaneously, inexpensive and uncomplicated in their own environment. It is not a unique experience, but is more likely to be understood as a lifestyle.

The term was shaped by British authors Alastair Humphreys with his book “Microoadventures”. In this article you will learn what sustainable opportunities for micro adventure there are and what you should pay attention to.

Which sustainable micro adventure can you do?

The definition of the term micro adventure is very vague and leaves space for individual freedom. A few sustainable opportunities for micro adventure that bring zest for life are, for example:

  • Overnight at the free starry sky: whether on the balcony or in your own garden, you would like to relax and switch off, there is hardly anything nicer than spending the night in nature. A night without a smartphone, laptop and television, but with the sounds of nature. More on this: Outdoor sleeping: The DOS and DOSS.

  • Yoga exercises in nature: After the end of the day, yoga is the best sport for many people to reduce stress, often in their own four walls. There are also many beautiful places for yoga in the countryside. How about, for example, a nice forest lighting or an idyllic lake?

  • Time -out with a hammock in the forest: forests are among the quietest retreats. If you are looking for yourself, you are a good choice. Grab your hammock and fix them on two stable trees. The thoughts can start.

  • Barefoot run on a summer meadow: Many know the feeling of exploring the world with bare feet, still from childhood. But even as an adult: R you can just leave your shoes in the closet. The fresh grass, the soft sand or the small pebbles under your feet are like a free foot massage.

  • Meditative walk to the sunrise: Often you don’t perceive nature with its diverse plants and animals. On a meditative walk, you can feel the living space nature with all your senses and stroll through nature in silence. The whole thing is even nicer with the sunrise or doom in the background.

Neither time nor money is necessary for a micro adventure. However, you should have certain properties for your next adventure “in your luggage”:

  • Curiosity: It is most worthwhile to get a micro adventure when you get to know the world with open eyes and the desire to get to know something new. Without curiosity, adventures often give little joy.

  • Courage: micro adventure requires a lot of courage to break new ground and try out unusual things. You shouldn’t overestimate yourself either. For example, if you are afraid outdoors before one night, take a friend: inside and share the adventure with them.

  • Spontaneity: You shouldn’t have to plan micro adventure in the long term. Preparations require a lot of time and energy. In addition, activities planned are no longer adventure, because their course is too predictable.

  • Sustainability: A sustainable micro adventure does not only require that it takes place in nature. Instead, you should also settle certain rules, for example that you do not drive to your destination by car. The bicycle and public transport are available as alternatives (also with Germany ticket). What else can you know about micro adventure?

Further information on micro adventures can also be found in the book “Microoadventures: Local Discoveries for Great Escapes” by Alastair Humphreys (in English). This is available, for example, at Medimops or Amazon. Unfortunately, a translation does not yet exist, but from German -speaking author: there are also various books on the subject of micro adventure, for example in Buch7 and Thalia.

By the way: A canoe tour or a spontaneous city break in Germany are also available as a micro adventure. You can let your creativity run free and try out what you enjoy. Let’s go!
