Until what age can a woman become pregnant and have children? And up to what age can a man father children?
Answer
The quality of a woman’s eggs decreases above the age of 35, but the woman in principle remains fertile until the menopause. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. A woman in menopause no longer ovulates. Nevertheless, it is possible for a woman to become pregnant after the menopause, but then artificially through in vitro fertilization of a donor egg that can be implanted in her uterus.
In principle, a man can father children until the end of his life, even into old age. But the quality of his sperm cells also decreases with age. There is an accumulation of mutations in the sperm cells that can be passed on to the children he fathers. Children of older fathers are therefore more likely to have birth defects.
