Update for Hyundai Ioniq 5 brings larger battery and rear wiper

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N not only distinguishes itself from the regular Ioniq 5 with a lot more power, spoilers and noise, but strangely enough also with a rear window wiper and a larger battery pack. The last two things will eventually also find their way to less powerful versions.

A lot has already been said and written about the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. This is mainly because we published an extensive article about it earlier today, including a short video. In particular, the artificial, but surprisingly realistic sound of the car in practice sets off tongues in the comments. Amid everything that makes the first electric N striking, there are two less striking things that are also special. For example, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the only Ioniq 5 with a wiper on the rear window. It also gets its power from a battery pack that, with a gross 84 kWh, is considerably larger than the 77.4 kWh unit that is now the largest possible battery for the regular Ioniq 5.

When we ask Hyundai whether we can also expect that wiper and battery on other Ioniq 5s, we receive a short but clear nod. In short: ‘we didn’t actually want to publicize this yet, but indeed’, seems to be the message. So you can bet that these things will also come to the ‘normal’ Ioniq 5. To be honest, that’s not surprising, because we can’t imagine why only the sportiest Ioniq 5 would get it, especially for that wiper. Or is such a thing really essential at 260 km/h?

You could say that the larger battery is necessary to provide the somewhat less efficient ‘N’ with an adequate range. The Ioniq 5 N is indeed a relative drinking boat. With that 84 kWh it can travel 448 km, while the regular Ioniq 5 already reaches 507 theoretical kilometers from 77.4 kWh. So you can count on the fact that the car will gain several tens of kilometers with the new battery pack. By the way, the 84 kWh battery is not physically larger or heavier than the 77.4 variant, Hyundai says. It is therefore the result of an efficiency improvement, which is always a bonus.

Of course, nothing is yet known about the ‘when’ of the innovations. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 received a minor update about a year after its launch. Funnily enough, it also brought the combination of a larger battery and ‘something with’ rear view, only that ‘something’ was a set of digital exterior mirrors. We now know that Hyundai is working on a more serious facelift for the Ioniq 5, so it seems logical that the changes will be implemented.
