Second-hand market under pressure

Used car sales are down

For the third year in a row, the number of new cars delivered in the Netherlands is declining. The second-hand market also collapsed slightly in 2022. Nu.nl reports this based on figures from trade organization Bovag.

As a result of, among other things, the worldwide shortage of chips, car manufacturers have to deal with long delivery times. As a result, consumers are turning to the second-hand market, which is of course not finite. The demand for used cars is so great that the average asking price for used cars broke record after record in 2022. The sale of second-hand cars has therefore fallen slightly in 2022.

Car companies sold 1.16 million used cars to private individuals last year. In 2021 there were still 1.3 million. Private individuals also sold fewer used cars among themselves. The total number of used cars sold between private individuals fell from 674,000 in 2021 to 615,000 units last year. “The domestic market has in fact been bought out and suitable cars are often no longer easy to find across the border,” Bovag told Nu.nl. “Nevertheless, the demand for car kilometers remains high, also because, for example, public transport timetables have been stripped down. Many people will therefore stick to their car.”
