Difference from the start

Used electric cars (up to €45,000) are already much more popular than new ones

Since January 9, you can again apply for a purchase subsidy for the purchase – or private lease – of a new or used electric car. To tell you how the SEPP flag hangs, we dive into the figures.

On Tuesday, January 9, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) turned the cap on a new SEPP subsidy pot. This year you can again claim a financial compensation of several thousand euros if you purchase a new electric car with a maximum tax value (list price) of €45,000. You can also receive a subsidy on the purchase of a used electric car, provided the original list price was less than €45,000. Completely as expected, the part of the SEPP subsidy pot intended to boost the sale of second-hand electric cars is being used up significantly faster than the part reserved for new EVs. However, this is now happening earlier than last year.

In 2023, it took several months before the SEPP subsidy budget intended for used EVs was empty in percentage terms more than the budget intended for new EVs. This will be the case from the start in 2024.

New electric car

Of the total subsidy pot of €87.4 million, €58 million has been reserved to make the purchase of a new electric car more attractive. You can receive a compensation of €2,950 on the purchase of a new EV with a list price of up to 45 grand, just like last year. Between January 9 and 22, €3.35 million of the available €58 million was allocated. So 5.78 percent. There is still €54.65 million (95.2 percent) left. Subsidies have been requested for 1,136 new electric cars and there is still enough budget available for another 18,525 new electric cars.

Used electric car

This year, a total of €29.4 million subsidy budget is available for the purchase of a used EV. Anyone who buys a used electric car with an original maximum list value of €45,000 can claim a compensation of €2,000. In the period 9 to 22 January, €4.07 million in subsidy has already been requested for the purchase of a second-hand electric car. That is 13.8 percent of the total subsidy pot. The subsidy pot for used EVs is therefore empty in percentage terms after just two weeks than the pot made available for new EVs. A subsidy budget has been requested for 2,035 used electric cars, about 1.8 times as much as the budget has been requested for new EVs. There is still a budget available for 12,665 electric used cars.
