Utrecht: paid parking everywhere in 2034

Not so childish

Utrecht: paid parking everywhere in 2034

In the city of Utrecht you will eventually have to pay everywhere to be able to park. That rigorous paid parking policy was already known, but now we also know which neighborhood is next.

Utrecht apparently has no desire to literally postpone paid parking. After all, that is what often happens when a new ‘ring’ of POS terminals is installed in a city: the neighborhood next door is suddenly overflowing with cars. To compensate for this, that neighborhood will then also be ‘paid’ later, and so on.

In Utrecht they think they have found the solution: ‘paid parking’ must apply throughout the city in due course. Yes, payment is also mandatory in the outer suburbs. According to Utrecht, this is necessary to keep the city ‘liveable and accessible’, especially by reducing the number of cars. Paid parking would be a good way to combat parking nuisance and ‘stimulate sustainable alternatives to the car’.

Utrecht does not feel paid parking for the whole city in one fell swoop, but in three ‘blocks’. In districts such as Ondiep, Oog in Al, Kanaleneiland, Papendorp and Groenewoud, the closest to the already paid area, paid parking will be introduced in 2024 or 2025. Block 2 will follow in the period after that, i.e. between 2026 and 2030. This includes Rijnsweerd-Noord, Overvecht-Zuid, Zuilen and Lunetten. ‘Block 3’ is the last to act and logically includes all remaining districts. Paid parking will be introduced here between 2031 and 2034, so in that last year it should be everywhere.
