Attention power providers: Volvo will only offer cars with a plug from 2023. This intention fits in with the new direction that the Swedes are taking, in which simplification and ‘more is less’ are paramount.

Volvo will therefore go completely ‘Cord Only’ from 2023. That means that if you want to buy a new XC40, S60 or V90 in 2023, it will be equipped with a plug as standard. This can be in the form of a plug-in hybrid, or as a fully electric car, such as the XC40 or the new C40.
Less is more
This choice fits within the new business strategy of the Swedes. Volvo wants to simplify: fewer engines, versions and options, more convenience for the customer. So you only have to choose which (partly) electric Volvo they want, and in which version. The Momentum, Inscription and R-Design versions are hereby cancelled. This is now replaced by the so-called Essential, Core, Plus and Ultimate variants. According to Volvo, these versions should be richer equipped, with smaller option lists. The elimination of the petrol engines also means the end for the V90 Cross Country.

No problem for the Netherlands
The Swedes do not expect that we Dutch will have much trouble with the electrification of the brand. The manufacturer reports that 93% of the Volvo’s XC60 and XC90 that recently received a Dutch registration were already a plug-in hybrid.

Facelifts
There is good news for inveterate Volvo drivers who necessarily want to stay away from charging stations. The V60 is still outside the Cord Only strategy, and will still be available as a mild-hybrid (without a plug). Volvo has given the model a minimalist facelift, in which, among other things, the front and rear have been slightly redesigned. The brand has also improved the standard equipment, including the addition of an Android infotainment system and a whole host of updated safety systems. This renewed Volvo is available from 43,995 euros.

The XC40 has also been slightly retouched, including a sharpened front. According to the Swedes, the new nose is inspired by the new C40 Recharge. Volvo is proud to announce that the new XC40 Recharge as a pure electric model has a WLTP range of 425 km and 150 kW fast charging capability. With its price of 44,995 euros, this Volvo is only 500 euros more expensive than its plug-in brother.
