‘Understand the concerns’

VDL CEO addresses Nedcar personnel

It has been restless at VDL Nedcar since the beginning of this month due to uncertainties about the future. Top man Willem van der Leegte now addresses the staff. He asks to ‘keep the peace’, although he acknowledges that these are difficult times.

VDL Nedcar CEO Willem van der Leegte has called on the staff in a video message to keep the peace. That writes 1Limburgwho got the message. Van der Leegte calls the past weeks and days ‘hectic for everyone’. He also sketches a picture of the future prospects for the staff now that no new client has been found for when the contract with BMW expires. As a result, “we will not be able to retain all VDL Nedcar employees after March 2024. And that is, of course, just a really shitty message.”

There is a lot of disappointment, anger and concern among Nedcar staff about the situation that has arisen and the future. Van der Leegte: “We understand those concerns and feel responsible for a good solution. That not only means doing the maximum to retain as many jobs as possible, but that also includes a good social plan. We would like to resolve this with the trade unions .”

The failure of talks about that social plan led to a wildcat strike at VDL Nedcar on 3 May. Work was also stopped on 4 May and activists blocked parts of the site. May 5, the rest seemed to be back for the time being due to an ultimatum to get the management to the table. The management did not respond to that and at the beginning of this week it was therefore hit again.
