VDL in conversation with action group about forest clearing Nedcar

VDL is in consultation with action group ‘De Groene Sporenwolf’ about the felling of a piece of forest near Born. Both parties will let you know after reporting in The Limburger. The forest clearing is necessary for the expansion of the VDL Nedcar car factory. Earlier, an attempt by both parties to reach an amicable settlement failed.

The activists prefer to see that the Sterrebos, as the piece of nature in the vicinity of the car factory is called, is preserved. If that is not possible, they want the old trees from that forest to be moved to a new location. In addition, ‘De Groene Sporenwolf’ wants VDL to provide guarantees for the quality of life in the village of Nieuwstadt, which is located right next to the factory. VDL, in turn, wants to have the ax set in the forest measuring more than 7 hectares in order to enable expansion of the factory in the short term. In view of the ongoing talks with Rivian, VDL would probably prefer to start with this today rather than tomorrow.

A spokesperson for VDL spoke of a ‘constructive consultation’, but could not say much more about it. “We intend to work it out together,” he said. Earlier, an attempt to reach an amicable settlement between the two parties failed. Those consultations should have prevented a session of the Council of State on an appeal by the action group against VDL Nedcar’s expansion plans, but that session eventually went ahead. The verdict is expected in a few weeks. After the hearing, the two parties apparently resumed talks. The action group expects to be able to provide more clarity about the results of the negotiations in the coming weeks.

There are a few vans of the mobile unit at Nedcar today. As a precaution, according to the police. “We are alert to any possible action or demonstration,” said a spokesman. “There are signs that something might happen.” He didn’t want to say anything more about it. Everything is still quiet at and around the factory and the adjacent Sterrebos.
