At the VDL Nedcar car factory in Born, Limburg, 750 jobs will disappear. The factory will still make cars for BMW until 2023, but production will be reduced from next year. For that reason, fewer people are needed.
The 750 jobs that will be cut consist of 600 temporary workers and 150 self-employed employees. This confirms a spokesperson for the company NU.nl, after reporting on this from 1Limburg. VDL Nedcar wants to prevent forced redundancies as much as possible and strives to redeploy as many employees as possible elsewhere in the company. In addition, the car factory will offer a departure arrangement. After the 750 jobs were cut, about 4,000 employees still work at the Born site. The news is somewhat striking, because in October VDL Nedcar opened another 150 vacancies due to an increase in BMW sales. Apparently, the car manufacturer is now back from that.
For the period after 2023, management is busy looking for a new customer. CEO Paul van Vuuren says against 1Limburg that there is interest, especially from countries outside Europe. He hopes to have a deal with a new customer at the end of next year. In preparation for this, VDL Nedcar wants to expand the current factory. Van Vuuren hopes that the provincial government will give approval for this soon. He believes this is important, because the expansion makes it easier to attract a new customer. The director said earlier that he is optimistic about the future of the car factory. Which manufacturer will ultimately have cars produced in the Netherlands will have to be shown next year.
