VDL Nedcar will shut down production

Following the BMW Group, VDL Nedcar will phase out the work in Born. At the end of this week, work should stop completely in the factory.

BMW announced earlier today that it is closing all European factories due to the corona crisis. After this it was unclear for a while what consequences this would have for VDL Nedcar, since Minis and the BMW X1 are being built there.

In a statement to Techzle, among others, VDL now announces that it will also stop work. “The coronavirus causes a shortage of critical parts to continue to produce at VDL Nedcar MINI’s and the BMW X1. That is why VDL Groep, following the example of the client BMW Group, has decided to temporarily and responsibly reduce production and the production of to shut down the factory in Born, “said the VDL Groep.

According to VDL, various scenarios are currently being considered. It is expected that production will stop completely on March 20, this coming Friday. According to VDL, the possibilities for resuming production as of 20 April, exactly one month later, are being examined together with the BMW Group. Not totally unimportant; for roughly 5,000 employees in Born, VDL hopes to be able to make use of the cabinet’s emergency measures announced yesterday. This means that staff must be able to be paid out (at least partly) during this period.
