Verstappen: ‘Big nonsense that the car was designed for me’

Max Verstappen undoubtedly has an exceptionally good car this year, but according to him it is nonsense that the RB19 perfectly suits his driving style. The suggestion that that is why he performs so much better than teammate Sergio Pérez can therefore also be thrown out the trash bin.

There is no stopping Max Verstappen. Last Sunday he recorded his tenth GP victory in a row, something that has never been seen before in the history of Formula 1. There is no denying that Verstappen partly owes this to the car he has this year, but in the end you still have to do it as a driver and Sergio Pérez shows this year that not everyone is a permanent podium candidate with the RB19. According to some, the latter is partly because the RB19 is mainly ‘designed around Verstappen’. “Bullshit comments,” the Dutchman calls them Motorsport. “That’s not how it works.”

The 25-year-old thinks it is complete nonsense that the RB19 is completely to his liking to effectively give him an advantage over his teammate: “I just say: ‘give me the fastest car you can design and then I will drive around it’ “Every year the car is something different. I don’t really have a specific driving style, I adapt to what makes the car fast,” said the 47-time Grand Prix winner. He believes that it should not be underestimated what it requires of the team to deliver what is currently being delivered: “People don’t know what is happening in the team and how difficult it is to deliver what we deliver, even though we have a good car.”
