Verstappen wins Hungarian Grand Prix after impressive catch-up race

Max Verstappen won the Hungarian Grand Prix in a fantastic way. The Dutchman started from tenth place, but worked his way up to the lead as the race progressed. Ferrari went wrong again during the race, causing Verstappen to share the podium with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

With his win, Verstappen increases his lead in the championship. After his victory in Hungary, the Dutchman is on 258 points, Charles Leclerc comes out on 178 points after his sixth place. That means the gap between the two drivers has grown from 63 to 80 points. Verstappen made a small mistake during his advance, by spinning after he had just passed Leclerc. The Limburger recovered quickly from this, after which he passed Leclerc again and then drove to victory in a controlled manner.

Verstappen’s victory is mainly due to Red Bull’s superior strategy. Verstappen started on the soft tires and then made two pit stops to the mediums. Ferrari used the medium tire for Leclerc twice and then put him on the hard tire. Leclerc had no grip on the hard tire, while at that time it was already clear that other drivers hadn’t succeeded either. That made him an easy prey. Sainz therefore wanted to finish on the red belt, but had to drive too long and eventually fell prey to Hamilton.

Hamilton drove on the same strategy as Sainz, but the Briton stopped for the red belt much later. As a result, the seven-time world champion had the pace to drive into second place in the final phase, including past Russell. He had the same strategy as Verstappen, but not the same pace as the Dutchman.

After the race in Hungary, Formula 1 will have a summer break for three weeks, of which the factories must be completely closed for two weeks. The next Grand Prix is on August 28 in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.
