Production in Wolfsburg

Volkswagen explains a few things about its production planning for the coming years. We also hear about the arrival of some interesting models.
Volkswagen has reviewed production planning for some of its German factories and allocated future models. The most important news is for Volkswagen’s home base in Wolfsburg. Production of a ‘fully electric SUV for the A-segment’ will start there in 2026. That is undoubtedly the car that people were talking about at the presentation of the ID2all at the beginning of this year. At that time it was only a ‘compact’ SUV, now we know that it will be one in the lower segment. Not an SUV brother of the ‘ID2’, as previously seemed an option, but really a step below that. This may then become the ID1. With a price tag of ‘less than €20,000’ and a high body, it is clear that Volkswagen is going all out on the Dacia Spring with this newcomer.
More news for Wolfsburg? Of course. Earlier this year, CEO Thomas Schäfer announced that an electric sequel will probably follow the current Golf. Those plans have now become a lot more concrete. Volkswagen confirms that in Wolfsburg ‘VW icon Golf will be led into the electric future on an SSP basis’. Completely as expected, but now also stated in so many words. As the successor to both MEB and PPE, the SSP platform is being prepared for almost the entire Volkswagen Group range and we can expect it to be available at the end of this decade. The Volkswagen Golf IX will therefore logically have to wait another six years. The current Golf will soon be facelifted.
Finally, production of the Volkswagen ID3 will be increased in Wolfsburg, which is striking, because in Zwickau production is being temporarily scaled back. It is possible that, as the rumor goes, an end to production in Dresden is in the air. There is not only positive news for Wolfsburg. Initially, Volkswagen’s electric flagship, the Trinity, was also going to be built there in a brand new factory, but that honor will soon fall partly to Zwickau. Last year it already seemed that the planned Trinity factory would be nipped in the bud.
