Volkswagen CEO: ‘Seat has a future’

Anyone who thinks Seat will no longer exist in a few years is wrong. At least, that’s what we infer from the words of Volkswagen Group CEO Thomas Schäfer. Seat will probably survive this decade, although the question is how long that name will still be on cars.

The Cupra brand, which originated from Seat, currently demands almost all the attention with electric newcomers, while the biggest news about Seat is only about facelifts of existing fuel models. Even when looking ahead to new models from the Volkswagen Group, there is no mention of Seat in all languages. That gives reason to doubt the life expectancy of the brand. Former VW CEO Herbert Diess, however, indicated last May that there is still a role for Seat within the group for the time being. His successor, Thomas Schäfer, is now also expanding on it to the British coach.

Schäfer makes it a little more concrete than Diess. CEO appointed last summer declares that Seat will not be turned down, that the future is being discussed and that for the time being it is ‘good until 2028 or 2029’. “We are still working on a plan for Seat.” In addition, he places a comment that Seat as a car brand is clearly in the balance. “Cupra is the future of Seat. Cupra is the reinvented Seat for the time to come, Cupra is making the electrification transition much faster.”

This seems to indicate – not for the first time – that Seat will sooner or later only be responsible for the production of Cupra, and that models with their own name on them will disappear. However, Schäfer also hints that Seat may become a ‘mobility brand’. Perhaps the name Seat will eventually only appear on all kinds of vehicles for city use, but no longer on conventional cars.
