Car sales up 6.5 percent
More passenger cars were sold in January than in the same month in 2022. This is a growth of just under 7 percent. Not a bad result, after all, the car industry is still experiencing the consequences of shortages of microchips and wiring harnesses.
In January, 32,845 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands. This is evident from figures from Bovag, RAI Association and RDC. That was 6.5 percent more than in January 2022. Then the Dutch sales counter remained at 30,848 units. However, we are still well behind the last January months of 2019 and 2020. In January 2019, 44,303 new passenger cars were registered and in January 2021 about 41,000. Bovag, RAI Association and RDC aim for a total of 340,000 new passenger cars to be registered by 2023. Last year there were still 312,129. January’s results are in line with that expectation.
Most popular car brands in the Netherlands, January 2023
Volkswagen has two reasons to celebrate. In January it was the brand that registered the most cars in the Netherlands and it owned the model for which the most copies were registered. In January, 4,086 new Volkswagens were registered, giving the brand a market share of no less than 12.4 percent. Toyota follows with some distance in second place (2,369 cars, market share 7.2 percent). Places three to five are for Skoda, Kia and Peugeot.

Most popular car in the Netherlands, January 2023
The Volkswagen T-Roc was the most popular model with 870 registrations in January, although all cars in the Top 5 are quite close together. In second place is the ever-popular Peugeot 208 (848 units), closely followed by the Volkswagen Polo, Lynk & Co 01 and Seat Ibiza.
