Volkswagen has had to give up considerably in 2020 when it comes to sales numbers. Yet there is also one big plus for the Wolfsburg brand: thanks to the market launch of the ID3, the number of EVs sold has tripled compared to 2019.
Worldwide, Volkswagen sold more than 5.3 million cars in 2020. Compared to last year, this means a sales decrease of 15.1 percent. In December, Volkswagen still realized rising sales numbers in Western Europe, the United States and the Middle East / Africa, but that was not enough to fully rectify the consequences of the corona crisis. In Western Europe, Volkswagen suffered the most severe blow over the year as a whole, with sales declining 23.4 percent. Volkswagen does say it has been able to maintain its market share worldwide.
In the Netherlands, Volkswagen sales fell by 7.3 percent to 44,747 cars. This decline was partly limited by the introduction of the ID3, of which Volkswagen sold 10,954 copies in our country. This ID3 helped ensure that Volkswagen’s total EV sales rose to 134,000 cars in 2020. In 2019, there were more than 45,000. The sale of plug-in hybrids also rose sharply: from more than 37,000 cars in 2019 to 78,000 in 2020.
High expectations
Next year, Volkswagen wants to further strengthen its electric offensive. The ID4, which was unveiled at the end of last year, should now start to pay off. Until 2025, the brand will invest € 35 billion in EVs. Over the next five years we can expect a whole series of new models: the ID5 as the ‘coupé version’ of the ID4, a seven-seater in the form of the ID6 and the production version of the ID Vizzion. The more traditional models include a facelift of the Polo in the pipeline. Enough to look forward to.
